The Juice Box Bully teaches children how to stand up to bullying. Pete begins a new school and his behavior turns bad. The kids in his class teach him about "The Promise" but he has to decide if he will get rid of his bullying habits and do what is right. This would be great for 1st-4th grade. Your students could make a class promise and sign it.

Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace - Mary Hoffman, Caroline Binch

Amazing Grace is a powerful book for young children and an excellent read for 1st-3rd grade. Grace is a young girl who works hard to achieve her dream and goals. Even though she is a girl, she does not let those around her stop her from doing exactly what she sets out to do. A fun activity to go along with this book is to have the kids write about what they want to be when they grow up. To make it extra fun, it could be a dress up day!

Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum - Kevin Henkes

Chrysanthemum would be a great read for 2nd or 3rd grade during the first week of school. Chrysanthemum begins school and loves her name, but when she gets to school, classmates begin to make fun of her name, hurting her feelings. But, when the other students in her class are introduced to another teacher, things begin to change for Chrysanthemum and she blossoms. This book deals a lot with hurt feelings and being kind to one another. An idea during a read aloud, would be to cut out a paper heart and have the students crinkle the heart every time they hear something unkind. After the book is over, have your students put band aids on the heart to help them understand that mean words are hard to forget about. This could lead to a class promise and agreement.

First Day Jitters
First Day Jitters - Julie Danneberg, Judy Love

First Day Jitters is the perfect book to read on the first day for 1st/2nd grade! All students, and even teachers, get nervous on the first day. The main character in this story is the teacher, who doesn't want to get up and go to school because she is so nervous! The reader doesn't discover this until the ending. A fun idea to go along with this book is to make Jitter Juice to help ease the first day nerves! Also, students could write about what makes them nervous-this also allows for the teacher to get a quick writing sample.
